A major overhaul of workers’ rights is on its way, but the proposed changes are still being worked on and there is a need for clarity. Changes could still be made to proposals before most take effect in two years’ time and I have summarised what is being proposed.

The National Living Wage will now apply to all workers aged 21 and over (previously 23 and over).
New rates from 1 April 2024 are as follows:
Apprentices are entitled to the apprentice rate if they’re either:
- Aged under 19.
- Aged 19 or over and in the first year of their apprenticeship.
The higher rate starts to apply from the next pay reference period after the increase. The pay reference period is the period of time the pay covers. For example 17 to 16 of the month - therefore old rate applies for 1 April to 16 April and new rate for 17 April to 16 May.
- Up to one-week unpaid leave per year from day one.
- Dependent with ‘long term care need’.
- No evidence needed for eligibility.
- Becomes a one day right
- Two requests per year
- Consultation before refusing
- Two months to deal with requests.
Rate for statutory maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental, and parental bereavement pay will increase to £184.03 per week(previously £172.48).
The rate for statutory sick pay will increase to£116.75 per week (previously £109.40).
The lower earnings limit, below which employees do not qualify for these statutory payment rates will remain unchanged at £123 per week.
- Max 12 weeks added to maternity/paternity leave from day one
- Baby must be hospitalised before 28 days old for at least one week
- Paid at statutory rate if eligible.
